A rasping first-half stoppage-time strike from Jason Puncheon saw Milton Keynes Dons gain their first league win of the season after they secured a 1-0 victory over Torquay United.

In windy conditions it was the Dons who started brighter and they were nearly gifted the lead in the sixth minute when Allan Smart's weak header from Gareth Edds' cross was fumbled over the bar by Gulls keeper Arjan Van Heusden.

The home side continued to dominate the early exchanges and a series of chances should have seen them take the lead.

Firstly, good wing play from Puncheon saw him cut the ball back to Izale McLeod and he side-footed a shot wide when well-placed before the latter played in Laurent Herve who saw his low drive saved.

Puncheon then saw another effort whistle just over the bar before Torquay had their first sight on goal, though a last-ditch tackle from Steve Palmer denied Martin Gritton a clear run on goal.

That half-chance gave Torquay the confidence to offer more of an attacking threat and as the half progressed Dons keeper Scott Bevan was forced into action and produced a fine save from Stuart Noble who had been set up by Jo Kuffour.

However, just as the half had started the home side finished it creating chances.

They were unlucky in the 34th minute when defensive confusion let in Herve and with just the keeper to beat he did just that but saw the ball bounce off the inside of the post and go out for a corner.

The home fans though did see their side go ahead in first-half stoppage time. Smart volleyed inches wide before Puncheon found space on the edge of the box and rifled home.

The lead was nearly doubled after the restart but Malvin Kamara's cross was deflected on to the outside of the post.

That was as good as it got for most of the half as the game turned into a scrappy encounter.

Both sides forced chances in the closing moments and the Dons were lucky not to be punished for their wasteful finishing when Torquay missed two glorious late chances through Brian McGlinchey and Martin Gritton.
