Two first-half goals gave Burnley victory over Wimbledon and three precious points in their struggle against relegation.

In a tense opening Burnley took the lead with their first real attempt on goal after 26 minutes when Paul Weller's deep centre was knocked back across the face of goal by Glen Little for club captain Graham Branch to head home from close range.

Wimbledon were unlucky not to equalise when a 25-yard shot from midfielder Gary Smith struck the inside of the post.

The home side were gifted a second goal in stoppage time when Brian Jensen's clearance was glanced towards the penalty area by Branch and French central defender Harry Ntimban-Zeh headed over keeper David Martin.

Burnley boss Stan Ternent said: "This was a massive win for us. If we can get our injured players fit then my side will have a good chance of collecting the remaining three points which I believe will be necessary." The Burnley boss singled out skipper Branch for his role in leading the attack following an injury to striker Ian Moore, saying: "He did very well, got a goal and had an effect for the own goal as he made a mediocre ball into a top class ball that finished in the back of the net." The match was also Ternent's last of a four-game touchline ban as the Clarets boss was forced to sit next to the club chairman.

The Burnley boss did not enjoy the experience saying: "He makes you nervous." Dons boss Stuart Murdoch reacted to the defeat by saying: "The second goal killed us, whilst the game is never over at 2-0 it is enough of a cushion to be comfortable." Murdoch refused to blame debutant keeper Martin for the killer second goal.

"It was a horrible own goal and I felt sorry for the keeper," he added. "It was his league debut but defenders have to deal with balls in those situations.

"We let the ball bounce which was a cardinal sin. You have to deal with it before it bounces."
