Macclesfield Town manager Ian Brightwell was devastated after his side surrendered a 3-1 lead to two late strikes from a determined MK Dons.

"It feels like we've lost even though, in reality, we've picked up a point against one of the best teams in the league," he said.

Paul Ince, who departed Macclesfield after completing the great escape for the Cheshire club last season, said he never gave up.

"Having worked here last year, I know that Macclesfield have a habit of conceding leads and I always felt we could get back into the game," he said.

"However, we should be beating sides like Macclesfield if we want to challenge."

MK Dons took the lead in the 20th minute when Macc keeper Tommy Lee saw a skidding Keith Andrews drive slip through his fingers.

However, Francis Green, who was brought to Macclesfield in the close season by Ince, equalised in the 33rd minute with a telling lob from 25 yards.

Macc took the lead on 57 minutes when substitute Martin Gritton scored within three minutes of coming on for his debut with a sharp reaction volley after a powerful header from Carl Regan had been cleared off the line.

Macc looked to have sealed the points on 63 minutes when Green scored his third goal in two games with a stunning 25-yard drive.

However, Leon Knight handed the Dons a lifeline with a volley on 73 minutes and, deep into injury time, Colin Cameron had Ince punching the air after a shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Afterwards, Ince brushed aside the negative reaction from the crowd.

"I'm a big man and I've had far worse at West Ham and Manchester United, so I can take that sort of stuff in my stride," he responded.

"However, it is a little disappointing when you consider, but for the likes of me and Ray Mathias, they would have been watching Conference football this season."
